2021 is almost over and 2022 is just around the corner. While you might be tempted to wait until the new year to take a look at your career, why not use these last few weeks as an opportunity to get ahead of everyone else?
Here is our list of our top five things you should do before the end of the year if you’re looking to progress your career.
1 .Set goals
Before you hit the panic button(!) we aren’t suggesting that you set a long list of goals to achieve by the end of the year. What we’re referring to is to take stock of your professional goals; do they still feel relevant? What have you already achieved? Is there anything missing?
By setting goals, you are also defining what success looks like for you. Whether it’s a promotion or securing funding for a passion project, you can take action towards being able to tick these off your wish list, by putting your goals into words.
We recommend that you break items down into both short-term and long-term goals. This way you can see your progress happening on a regular basis as you complete the short-term, more easily achievable goals, while continuing to work on bigger items that are going to take longer to see results from.
2. Ask your managers for feedback
Feedback from your superiors is a great place to start when it comes to planning your next career move. Instead of pulling your hair out trying to decide which areas you really shine, and where you might need to focus on improving, your manager or other senior leaders that you work with regularly are well placed to discuss this with you. You can then plan your professional development around your strengths and areas for improvement.
Plus you’ll also get a good idea of what you are doing well, and will be able to highlight these strengths if you are angling for a promotion or a new position!
3. Know your industry
If you are looking to make a career change, you’d be wise to know what is going on within your industry or the industry you’re looking to move into. Social networking platform LinkedIn is where professionals gather online. It makes it the perfect place to keep up to date on industry trends and possible opportunities.
If it’s your current industry, you can also learn a lot by talking to your co-workers and superiors who will most likely possess a wealth of useful knowledge.
This brings us nicely onto networking! With the return of in-person events, there are more great opportunities to connect with industry leaders.
If you can’t get out there in person, LinkedIn is also a great place to connect virtually with other people in your industry, both locally and globally. Just remember to always personalise any messages you send out – you don’t want to come across as disingenuous!
